Effect of the Moon
Earthquakes and tides
Debated
A statistical hint, not a forecast.
The evidence
Tides also stress Earth’s crust. Ide, Yabe and Tanaka found large earthquakes relatively more frequent during periods of strong tidal stress. The link is statistical and cannot predict a quake.
Key studies
- Earthquake potential revealed by tidal influence on earthquake size–frequency statistics Large quakes were relatively more frequent during strong tidal stress, a statistical link still discussed.
