Effect of the Moon
Ocean tides
Established
The Moon raises the tides, helped by the Sun.
The evidence
The Moon pulls harder on the side of Earth that faces it than on the far side, which stretches the oceans into two bulges. The Sun does the same with about half the Moon’s force. When the two line up, at new and full moon, tides are at their highest.
